Mines Game: How It Works and How to Play

The Mines game is one of the quickest instant win games in any casino lobby. Here’s how it works, the real odds behind each pick, and why the popular ‘strategies’ can’t beat the maths.

Mines game guide: a 5x5 Mines grid with four revealed gems, one mine and a 1.45x multiplier

Mines in 30 seconds

You pick tiles on a 5×5 grid. Some hide gems, some hide mines. Every gem raises your multiplier, and you can cash out at any time. Hit a mine and you lose the round’s stake. More mines mean bigger multipliers and a higher chance of losing.

How to play the Mines game

  1. Set your bet. Choose your stake for the round.
  2. Choose the number of mines. Most versions let you hide between 1 and 24 mines among the 25 tiles.
  3. Pick a tile. A gem raises your multiplier; a mine ends the round.
  4. Cash out or keep going. After each gem, take your winnings or pick another tile.
  5. Repeat. Each round is independent; the mines are placed fresh every time.

Mines key facts

Several providers make Mines games. The best known is Spribe’s version:

Other providers’ Mines games can use different grids, RTPs and limits. Check the game rules in the lobby.

Mines odds: your chance of surviving each pick

The odds are simple to work out because the grid has 25 tiles. With 3 mines, your first pick is safe 22 times out of 25 (88%). Your second pick has 21 safe tiles left out of 24, and so on. The table shows your chance of reaching each point safely, and the multiplier a 97% RTP game pays there.

10 mines60.0% · 1.62x35.0% · 2.77x19.8% · 4.90x5.7% · 17.16x

Chance of reaching that point without hitting a mine, then the multiplier at 97% RTP. Exact multipliers vary slightly by game.

How multipliers grow: a worked example

You bet A$2 with 3 mines and plan to cash out after 3 gems.

  • Your chance of finding 3 gems in a row is 67.0%.
  • If you do, the multiplier is 1.45x, so you cash out A$2.90.
  • One time in three, you hit a mine first and lose your A$2.

On average, that plan returns 67.0% x A$2.90 = about A$1.94 for every A$2 bet. That’s the 97% RTP at work: an average cost of about 6 cents a round.

Mines strategy: what works and what doesn’t

Here’s the key point most strategy guides miss: every cash-out point has the same 97% average return. The multiplier is priced from the odds, so a low-risk plan and a high-risk plan cost the same over time. Strategy changes how your results swing, not how much you lose on average.

StrategyWhat people claimThe reality

Many mines, chase big multipliersFaster profitsRare big wins, frequent losses. Same 97% average return
Picking patterns (corners, edges)Mines avoid certain tilesMines are placed randomly each round. Patterns make no difference
Doubling the bet after a lossYou’ll win it backLosses grow fast and can wipe out a budget in a few rounds
Predictor apps or botsThey show where the mines areThey can’t. Many are scams that steal logins or money

Mines ‘predictor’ apps and signals are scams. A provably fair game can’t be predicted before the round. Never install them or enter your casino login into one.

Is the Mines game rigged?

Spribe’s Mines is provably fair. Before each round, the game commits to a hidden ‘seed’ that decides where the mines are. After the round, you can see the seed and check that the layout wasn’t changed after you picked. That’s more transparency than most casino games give you. It doesn’t change the house edge, though: the game is fair, but it still keeps about 3% of stakes over time.

Keep fast games under control

Mines rounds take seconds, which makes it easy to play far more rounds than you meant to. At A$2 a round and three rounds a minute, an hour is 180 rounds and A$360 in bets. The average cost is about A$11, but real sessions swing much more than that.

  • Set a session budget before you start, and stop when it’s gone.
  • Set a time limit or session reminder in your account.
  • Avoid autoplay if it makes you lose track of rounds.
  • Never chase losses by raising the mines or the bet.
